Writing Workshops from Jean MacLeod & The Write Magic:

The Magic Words:
Teaching Creative Writing to Children in the Classroom

HOW can you jumpstart a student’s interest in writing?
WHICH magic words unlock a student’s ability to get creativity down on paper?
WHAT does cultural influence have to do with a student’s writing perspective?
WHY and WHEN should you involve the parents?

Jean MacLeod, Author and Editor, strives to make writing interesting and personally satisfying for each student. Writing happens to be a
skill that can only improve with passion and practice…a strong interest in creative writing lays the foundation for great academic writing!
Based on Lucy Caulkins Writers Workshop curricula, and the 6+1 Writing Traits, Jean offers teachers the answers to the ‘how, which,
what, why and when’ questions above, and presents her own tested ‘jumpstart’ to creative student writing in the classroom. There are
magic words that will inspire boys and girls to tap into their own ideas, personal voices and life narratives, and there are simple,
easy-to-use guidelines to help students turn their imagination into powerful, cohesive stories.

Adoption-Parenting presentations from Jean MacLeod:

Adoption-Parenting Your Tweenie (for parents of children ages 8-12)
Adoption adds a layer of complexity to an already confusing life event: puberty! How can we lead the way through new situations
and lend a hand without alienating our changing children? How do we reinforce our ‘family’ structure, and set the stage for a
    smooth adolescence? This workshop includes practical adoption-parenting advice and shared discussion;
workshop information is applicable whether you are parenting a pre-tweenie, a tweenie or a young teen!
Adoption-Parenting Your Tweenie addresses issues that pertain particularly to adopted children-- change and transition (middle
school!), anxiety, sensory issues, social relationships-- and includes practical adoption-parenting advice and shared discussion.
PLUS, as our children change, so does our parenting role! Giving our children their own set of coping skills and acting as a
support team rather than a project manager causes a shift in our mom and dad identity.
How do we PARENTS handle the growing up years???

Parenting with Narratives: the A, B, C’s of Adoption Stories
How will your children view their adoption? What “story” will they read into their own lives as they begin to make sense of what
happened to them as young children? Realizing that there are gentle and creative ways to approach the issues of adoption and
the intense feelings of adoptees, and that children’s books can help provide the tools, is a relief for all of us adoptive parents who
have taken on this monumental job without much tech support! Children’s books can be a bridge to parent-child communication on
a variety of adoption topics. Learn how to make the most of these important tools; literature can help open sensitive conversations
and promote family intimacy.  Every adopted child needs a life-narrative--empower your child to become the ‘author’ of his or her
own story with a few simple writing guidelines.

Homeland Visits: Going Back, Moving Forward
The positive impact of preparation for a Homeland Trip is shared in this parent program about returning to China with an adopted
child. Speaker discusses the issues of: readiness and age, a child's maturity in terms of adoption and travel, parent needs,
orphanage and adoption city visits, and the importance of cultural and emotional awareness on a Homeland Trip or SWI tour. What
to plan for, what to expect, and how does a parent deal with the "unexpected" in China?
