YOUR MYTHIC JOURNEY
PLEASE NOTE:
  • This writing guide (adapted
from a guide by the South
    Mountain Community College
    Storytelling Institute) was
    formatted for Middle School
    and High School students, but
    it may be simplified and
    personalized for younger
    children

  • The story may be written
in first or third person

  • The writing of this story is a
    powerful 'journey' in of itself,
and may be a co-created work
    from both parent and child

  • Younger children will want to
    rush through the journey; help
them take it a page at a time...

and Have Fun!!!
Young Writers & Parent Support

Teaching “creative” writing to children
helps them to develop the elements of
structure, organization and personal voice
that will make them powerful “academic”
writers, as well. I focus on making writing
interesting and personally satisfying for a
child, because writing (for fun or for school)
happens to be a skill that can
only improve
through constant practice.

Parents can help a child jumpstart a journal,
a school assignment or a creative writing
project, by using a few interactive writing
tools at home. The 6 + 1 Writing Traits
provide an outline for success, but kids also
thrive on:
1) Parent Interest and Encouragement (stay
positive about  your child’s progress!)
2) Exciting, Age-Appropriate Reading
Materials
3)  A Consistent Period of Time Set Aside to
Write and Read
Every Day
